Making a speech at the State Duma on Wednesday Olga Golodets, the Deputy Prime Minister, said that young people were isolated from the system of the Russian Academy of Science today; the first Russian members of the Academy in the Petrine era had been at the age of 20 to 25 years, and then the average age of the RAS members was more than 70 years.
“As to establishment of the Academy of Sciences by Peter the Great: the first 11 members of the Academy were at the age of 20 to 25 years. Today our young people are isolated from the RAS system, as more than half of the researchers among employees are at the retirement age and older,” said Golodets at the State Duma, where the first reading of the draft law on the RAS reform takes place.
She added that the average age of the Russian members of the Academy exceeded 74 years.
“According to official statistics about 2 thousand people, young scientists, leave the Russian Federation in order to conduct researches in foreign institutes,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
